Čiovo

Čiovo is a small, but densely populated island in Central Dalmatia, near the historical town of Trogir, serving as its suburbs and town beach. Unlike in Trogir, located in the mainland, the sea is clean in Čiovo due to the currents which constantly refresh it. Lush greenery, beautiful islets and beaches make it the most developed tourist resort in the narrower Split region. The soil there is of high quality, supplying the locals and tourists alike with excellent fruit, vegetables, wine and olive oil. There are two bridges – one from the mainland to Trogir (built on a small island itself, like many Dalmatian mainland towns) and another one from Trogir to Čiovo. The towns on the island are Okrug Gornji, Okrug Donji, Arbanija, Žedno and Slatine. The former two were colonized by Napoleon’s soldiers during his short reign over Croatia, so that there are many French surnames, as well as the obvious French influences in the speech. The local joke states that even the dogs there bark “woooof” instead of “woof.” So if you’ve always wanted to visit St. Tropez, but can’t afford it…
