Trogir

If you are visiting the Split region, make sure you don’t miss Trogir, a beautiful historic town in Split’s western suburbs. Founded by Ancient Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and later ruled by Romans and Venetians, it is full of monuments from its rich history. The old town, the monumental St. John’s Cathedral, the city gate and walls, the Kamerlengo Fortress, the Duke’s Palace and many other sights are famous for their extraordinary beauty and cultural significance, having earned Trogir a place in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Several movies and series have been shot in the town, including two Doctor Who episodes and Game of Thrones, where it represented the magnificent city-state of Qarth. Trogir is definitely the best choice for the latter, because the town itself used to be one of the richest Dalmatian policies. Just like its GoT/ASOIAF counterpart, Trogir has also invested their huge trade profits into the creation of beautiful monuments. Apart from cultural heritage, there are also sunny beaches in the wider area, as well as two yacht marinas. The town’s original name, Tragurion, is derived from tragos, Greek for “male goat.” Although the word “tragedy” comes from the same linguistic root, you won’t even think of a tragedy among all that beauty and sunshine. In addition, the always cheerful and humorous locals will make you think the town’s name has to do with a comedy!
