Cavtat

Cavtat is a town near Dubrovnik (15 km/9 mi to the southeast), in the southernmost Croatian area called Konavle, with about 2,000 inhabitants. Tourism is developed (five hotels, including a five-star one, and lots of private accommodation, many restaurants, cafes, gift shops, a port where yachts can anchor). The town was founded by Greeks as Epidauros, and was conquered by Romans later. Its inhabitants fled from the Avar and Slavic invasion in the early 7th century AD, and founded a colony of Ragusa, which eventually became Dubrovnik. The town was populated again in medieval times, under the new name Cavtat. There are the ruins of a theatre, town walls, aqueduct and other monuments from the Antiquity, as well as many palaces and villas of seafarers.
