Split Region
Split is the largest city in Dalmatia and the second largest in Croatia. Its region stretches from Trogir in the west to Omiš in the southeast, and inland to the town of Sinj and its area. Split is the only city in the world founded as a palace – most of the old town consists of the monumental Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from which the city has developed. The historical centre of the neighboring town of Trogir, founded by Ancient Greeks, is another site on the UNESCO list. Sinjska alka, the equestrian tournament held in Sinj every first Sunday in August to commemorate the victory against a much larger Ottoman army in 1715, is inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and attracts many visitors each year. Beautiful nature, warm blue sea, lots of sunshine, delicious Mediterranean food, hospitable people and a rich history and culture are the reasons why you should visit Split and its region.
